How do you work out the gematria of a name?
Each letter is worth its place in the alphabet times six — A=6, B=12, C=18 … Z=156 — and the letters are added up. JOHN is J=60 + O=90 + H=48 + N=84 = 282. That is the cipher usually called English Gematria or Sumerian; other ciphers give the same name a different number, so a value only means something next to the cipher that produced it. Should I use my full name or just my first name?
There is no single correct answer, which is why this calculator scores each name on its own and shows the totals side by side. A middle name, a married surname, or a shortened form each produce a different number, and none of them is more “real” than the others. Decide which form of the name you are asking about before you calculate, rather than trying spellings until one lands on a number you like.
Do hyphens, apostrophes, and spaces change the value?
No. Only the letters A–Z are counted, so O’Brien and OBrien come to the same total, as do Mary-Jane and MaryJane. Accented letters and digits are skipped entirely.
Why do two different names have the same number?
Because matches are far more common than they look. JOHN and SARAH both come to 282, and they share a digital root of 3 as well — there are only nine possible roots, so roughly one unrelated pair in nine will share one. What does my name’s number mean?
On its own, nothing — it is an arithmetic result, not a reading. Gematria is a comparison tool: a total becomes interesting only when you set it beside other totals and ask how often that kind of agreement happens by chance.
